ABOUT X-RAYS

X-RAYS

The x-rays was discovered by Roentgen in 1885. The highly energetic electromagnetic radiation are emitted when fast moving electron penetrate into interior of atoms. These radiations are called x-rays.These radiations are also called inner shell transitions. The wave nature of x-rays was established by Berkely in 1906.The wavelength of x-rays was measured by Laue in 1912 which is of the order of nm. (Neno meter)

Production Of X-RAYS

The x-rays are generated when highly energetic electrons from heated filament strike on a metal target in evacuated tube as shown in diagram

X-RAYS SPECTRUM

The x-rays are produced when highly energetic electrons strike on metal target placed inside x-rays tube. A typical x-rays spectrum produced with 35Ke V electrons using Molybdenum target is shown in diagram.
This x-rays spectrum has continuous curve along with two peaks called K(alpha) and K(beta) peaks.
The curve cuts wavelength axis at a particular wavelength called cutoff wave length ^min. The continuous spectrum does not exist below this cutoff wavelength.
